Artist Statement
"I make art for many reasons: to speak out against injustice, to make the world a more colorful place, to put my two cents in on topics that shape modern society, but for the most part I make art because I feel it is what I was put on this earth to do. I have always been inspired by Dali and surrealism and more or less anything weird or odd. I have always been interested in the art of imagination; the more unworldly, the better. Life is a hard struggle from birth to death so anything that can take you away from the everyday monotony of life is good art to me. I like painting pictures that couldn’t possibly exist or happen in real life. I want to paint pictures and write music that is as alien to the human experience as possible. To me good art is a question mark, a riddle wrapped in an enigma that if unwrapped loses its mystique and takes away from the art work. This is why I never explain the meaning behind any of my work; each individual can take whatever they personally want from it. I envision my art being one really big ‘I told you so’ to society when everything comes crashing down. So if I was to say my art has a major theme it would be that humanity is doomed to fail. However, I don't want to be a one trick pony; life is also a great thing filled with happiness and darkness, so to devote my work strictly on the bad would not be a direct reflection of the human experience. That’s why I like for my work to show the darkness of humanity and the beauty of humanity with a twist of a sense of humor and not take my self too seriously, a flaw I feel many artists make. At the end of the day, I want the same thing any other artist has ever wanted: to simply be heard, to let the world know I was here, and to leave as big a mark as possible on it before it is too late." - Morgan Rankin, 2008
